The church has medieval origins. The bell tower was a watchtower with access to the ward gate. The church was extensively rebuilt in the 19th century. In 1623 the church passed from the diocesan jurisdiction of Lanciano to that of Chieti after a dispute. It offered overnight accommodations for pilgrims.
