Castle Genoa – Old Salle

It is a castle said to have been founded in the 10th century and to have performed functions of control and defense of the territory on behalf of the abbey of San Clemente a Casauria; following the decline of the monasteries, it became the residence of the various noble families who owned it, from the Colonna, to the Gonzaga, to the d’Aquino, to the Di Genova, who turned it into a baronial residence and who, to this day, are the owners. It was badly damaged in the 1915 earthquake, like the neighboring village of Salle Vecchio, and later rebuilt with the original material, though not in its entirety. Today it is home to a restaurant, whose rooms are furnished with period weapons, paintings, furniture and clothing.
