Built in the 16th century, the Convent of Santa Maria di Stignano is located along the ancient Via Francigena del Sud , in the direction of Monte Sant’Angelo, and over the years has been a valuable shelter for pilgrims heading to the Archangel’s cave. According to legend, the complex was built in 1231 by the priests of Castel Pagano, who allegedly erected the primitive chapel on the site where a poor blind beggar told them that he had regained his sight.
